Stewart Houston CBE

Stewart Houston CBE, has been a non-executive member of the Animal Health and Welfare Board for England (AHWBE) since 2011. He specialisms are welfare, Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE) and the EU Animal Health Law.

He was a leading figure for many years at The National Pig Association (NPA) and also a former BPEX (now AHDB Pigs) chair (2003 to 2015).

Stewart is a current member of the Assured Food Standards board.

I am pleased to tell you that the annual health and welfare review of livestock is now open to non-BPS registered farmers, meaning more livestock keepers in England can now apply. Through the Review, farmers who keep cattle, sheep and pigs can get funding to pay for a vet to visit their farm and carry out a yearly review.

Over the last couple of years, a group of farmers, supported by vets, specialists and Defra colleagues have worked together to design a way to help fellow farmers bolster the health and welfare of their stock, whilst at the same time improving their bottom line. We’re calling it the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway. In this post, I'll share more.
