The conflict in the Middle East continues to affect global fuel and energy markets, which in turn is contributing to higher fertiliser prices.
Recent market changes have led to a 30–40% rise in prices for some fertilisers.
These increases reflect global conditions rather than current supply issues in the UK. We know that it is a concern and we will continue to monitor the situation. We’d like to understand how these issues are impacting you.
If you’re a farmer or land manager in England, we’d be grateful if you could complete our short survey. Your responses will help us build a better picture of what’s happening on farms and will inform how we shape future support.
The survey asks a few simple questions about your farm and your experience with fertiliser. This includes the size and type of your farm, and where your land is.
It also asks whether recent fertiliser price changes have affected you. For example, you may have changed how much fertiliser you buy or use, when you buy it, where you buy it from, or how you apply it on your farm.
You may also be thinking about making changes for next season.
The survey asks whether you’ve faced any issues when buying fertiliser, including anything you perceive to be unfavourable compared to previous purchases. There's space to share any wider comments on fertiliser prices and affordability. You’ll also have the chance to share more detail about your experience in your own words.
At the end, you can choose to leave your email if you’d like to be involved in future research.
Share your views - complete the survey
It should take around 15 minutes to complete. The survey closes on 15 April 2026.
Your responses will help us build a better picture of what’s happening on the ground and inform how we shape future policy and support.
All data will only be accessible to the research team. Any data shared within Defra or publicly will be fully anonymised. Your SBI number will only be used to confirm your status as a farmer or land manager and to reduce duplicate entries. It will not be linked to your responses or any identifying information.
We look forward to hearing from you. To make sure your feedback is captured, please complete the survey rather than sharing your views in the comments.
Tools and information to help you plan
To support clearer and more timely information, we asked AHDB to increase how often it reports fertiliser prices. It now publishes this data weekly, giving farmers more up‑to‑date information to help with decision‑making.
We also know that we need to increase our resilience to future fertiliser price volatility by maximising the use of nutrients from both mineral fertilisers and from organic materials such as slurries and digestate.
The Nutrient Management Planning Tool is one way of making the most of mineral and organic nutrients, offering a free resource to help farmers plan and manage nutrient use, reduce costs, and cope with changes in fertiliser price.
In addition, AHDB’s Profit and Performance page brings together tools to help farmers and land managers understand their costs, benchmark performance and plan ahead.
It includes calculators and templates for cashflow, costs of production, investment planning and comparing farm performance across sectors.
Wider action on fertilisers
Through the Belém Declaration on Fertilisers, launched at COP30 last year, government is working internationally to reduce long‑term supply chain vulnerabilities. This aims to accelerate a global shift towards more sustainable fertiliser production and better nutrient use.
We also launched a consultation and call for evidence on modernising fertiliser product regulations. This will help improve future supply options and ensure the regulatory framework keeps pace with sector needs. It closes on 19 May, so there is still time to share your views.
